Overview of the PROVE Project
Jornada The Prototype Validation Exercise (PROVE) was a mini field campaign conducted in May 1997 near Las Cruces, New Mexico. The goals of PROVE were to (1) gain experience in the collection and use of field data for EOS product validation; (2) develop protocols for coordination, measurement, and data-archiving protocols; and (3) compile a synoptic land and atmospheric data set for testing algorithms. PROVE was held at the Jornada Experimental Range, an expansive plateau on the Chihuahuan Desert hosting a complex mosaic of grasses and shrubs.

In-Depth
The remote-sensing part of the campaign involved investigators from three different NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) instrument teams: MODIS (Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer), MISR (Multi-Angle Imaging Spectro Radiometer), and ASTER (Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer). The campaign also coincided with the AVIRIS (Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer) flight coordinated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and with Jornada Long-Term Ecological Research projects in the same basin.
