ISLSCP II EDGAR 3 Gridded Greenhouse and Ozone Precursor Gas Emissions
Get Data
Revision date: June 29, 2011

Summary:

The EDGAR (Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research) database project is a comprehensive task carried out jointly by the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) that stores global emission inventories of direct and indirect greenhouse gases from anthropogenic sources including halocarbons and aerosols both on a per country and regional basis as well as on a grid (see http://www.rivm.nl/edgar/ ). For the ISLSCP Initiative II data collection, global annual anthropogenic emissions for the greenhouse gases Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), and Nitrous oxide (N2O) are provided on a 1.0 degree by 1.0 degree grid for the years 1970, 1980, 1990, and 1995 and for the tropospheric ozone precursor gases Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrogen oxide (NOx), Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOC), and Volatile Organic Compounds) and Sulfur dioxide (SO2) for the years 1990 and 1995. there are 2 *.zip data files with this data set.

Additional Documentation:

This data set is one of the products of the International Satellite Land-Surface Climatology Project, Initiative II (ISLSCP II) data collection which contains 50 global time series data sets for the ten-year period 1986 to 1995. A complete description of the data, it's derivation, acknowledgements, and references provided by the ISLSCP II Data Management Staff is included with this data set as a companion file named 1_edgar_atmos_emis_doc.pdf.

ISLSCP II is a consistent collection of data sets that were compiled from existing data sources and algorithms, and were designed to satisfy the needs of modelers and investigators of the global carbon, water, and energy cycle. The data were acquired from a number of U.S. and international agencies, universities, and institutions. The data and documentation have undergone two peer reviews.

ISLSCP is one of several projects of Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) [http://www.gewex.org/] and has the lead role in addressing land-atmosphere interactions -- process modeling, data retrieval algorithms, field experiment design and execution, and the development of global data sets.

Data File Format

All of the data files in each data set within the ISLSCP Initiative II data collection are in standard ESRI ArcGIS ASCII grid format.  The file format consists of numerical fields of varying length, which are delimited by a single space and arranged in columns and rows. There are two *.zip file with this data set,  in 1.0 degree (1deg) spatial resolution:

edgar_data_1deg.zip:  When extrapolated, this file contains 28 comma delimited data files (*.csv) for 7 gases (CH4, CO2, N20, NOx, SO2, CO, and NMVOC for each of the 4 years (1970, 1980, 1990, and 1995).

edgar_maps_1deg.zip: When extrapolated, this file contains 28 two-dimensional ASCII map files for each of the 7 gases above on a 1.0 degree X 1.0 degree Earth grid, and end with the file extension .asc.

The 28 files in each of the *.zip files above are named as follows:

edgar_variable_data_1d_YYYY.csv or  edgar_variable_map_1d_YYYY.asc.

edgar identifies the data set, variable identifies the gas (see the table below), 1d identifies the spatial resolution as 1.0 degree, and YYYY is 1970, 1980, 1990, or 1995. In addition,  file names with lto include emissions data from landing and take-off operations of aircraft at less than 1,000 m.

File name examples: edgar_co_lto_map_1d_1990.asc       edgar_co_map_1d_1990.asc        edgar_co_data_1d_1990.csv    edgar_co2_lto_data_1995.csv
