Paulo Artaxo

Coordinator of the LBA Milênio Institute, which is responsible for the participation of 95 researchers in eight Brazilian states, with the task of analyzing land use changes in Amazonia and their implications for climate. Full Professor at the Institute of Physics, University of São Paulo, coordinator of the Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics. Member of the scientific committee of iLEAPS ( Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study ) of the IGBP (International Geosphere Biosphere Program ). Member of the International Panel on Climate Change Working Group. Member of the coordinating committee for Geosciences of FAPESP and of the Brazilian Antarctic Program of CNPq.

Carlos Afonso Nobre

Scientific Coordinator of LBA. President of the Science Steering Committee of LBA. Full Professor at the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC) - National Institute for Space Research - INPE. Member of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC); member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS-USA); Member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS-USA); member of the Brazilian Meteorological Society. Professor of "Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions" in the post-graduate program in meteorology at INPE; advisor for five doctoral and ten masters students. Permanent member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, 2003.

Regina C. C. Luizão

LBA Training & Education Coordinator, currently directing a portfolio of 46 fellowships (ITI and DTI) granted by the RHAE/CNPq/LBA Program; the courses and events for young scientists associated with LBA; and the production of educational materials based upon results made available by LBA. Researcher with a PhD in Ecology (1994) from the University of Stirling (Great Britain). Leader of scientific projects such a "Degradation processes and soil recovery in Central Amazonia" and "Directives for conservation of plant and animal populations and communities in tropical forests in Central Amazonia". Coordinator of the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, another project of bilateral cooperation between Brazil and the United States.

Mercedes Maria da Cunha Bustamante

Coordinator of the LBA Regional Office in Brasilia. PhD in Natural Sciences (1993) from the University of Trier, Germany. Adjunct Professor at the University of Brasilia. Areas of research: Ecosystem Ecology and Plant Ecophysiology. Advisor for ten undergraduate, seven masters and two doctoral students.

Ima Célia Guimarães Vieira

Member of the LBA Science Steering Committee. Research Professor and Postgraduate Research Coordinator for the Emilio Goeldi Museum of Pará. Member of the Science Steering Committee of the Mamirauá Institute/MCT. Member of the Executive Committee of the ARPA/MMA Project. Member of the Forestry Advisory Board of IBAMA- Belém. Member of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC). Advisor for 15 undergraduate, eight masters and two doctoral students.

José Antonio Alves Gomes

Director of INPA (National Institute of Research in Amazonia). Doctorate in Marine Biology from the University of California, USA. Professor at the University of Amazonas. Research interests in Physiology of Organs and Systems, Animal Genetics, Biophysics of Processes and Systems, Taxonomy of Recent Groups, Animal Behavior.
