What is Adobe Acrobat?

Adobe Acrobat software (from Adobe Systems Inc.) allows the creation of electronic documents for sharing across different computer platforms. The files are stored in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), which is a very compact binary format holding all text and graphics from the original document. PDF files can be viewed or printed on a variety of hardware, looking just like the original.

Downloading the Acrobat Reader 3.0

The Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 is available for most major computer systems. You can download it from the Adobe Systems Web site.

Configuring Netscape to use the Acrobat Reader

In order for Acrobat files to be downloaded correctly using Netscape, you must configure the Acrobat Reader as a Netscape Helper Application. The following steps should help you do this.

  1. Go under the "Options" menu and select "Preferences..."
  2. From the popup menu at the top of the screen, select "Helper Applications"
  3. Click on the "New..." button.
  4. Enter "application" for the File/Mime Type and "pdf" for the Subtype, and click on the "OK" button. That informaion will appear in a new line in the Helper Application table.
  5. Enter "pdf" in the Extensions field.
  6. Click on the "Browse..." button, then find and select the Acrobat Reader software.
  7. You can then choose either "Save" or "Launch Application", but you should probably select "Save" so that the file is permanently saved when downloaded.
  8. Quit and restart Netscape to make sure the changes are now in use.
