A generic spatial repository for inventory data
We describe the design and implementation
of a repository that is meant to
hold data collected during biological inventories.
These inventories typically aim to collect data on
the occurrence of a single group of life forms,
such as a family of invertebrates or a suborder
of plants, in a single geographic area such as a
natural park or reserve. The Reserva Ducke was
the first reserve in which precursors of inventories
for the ‘Programa de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade’
(PPBio) / ‘Levantamentos Rápidos Pesquisas
Ecológicas de Longa-Duração’ (RAPELD) program
were conducted.
In the program, two kinds
of inventory work are being carried out. The first
kind addresses the main aim of the project: to
track and map biodiversity, and thus to survey life
forms. The second kind is meant to support the
first in mapping characteristics of terrain itself.
Such characteristics may include, but are not restricted
to: terrain topography, such as elevation,
slope and aspect; climatic data, such as precipitation
and temperature statistics; soil, surface and
ground-water characteristics.
Our work aims to build a robust information system that
provides geospatial data support, and accommodates inventory
work of which the design is not yet known.
