AN AEROSOL AND TRACE GAS DATA ASSIMILATION SYSTEM FOR THE CCATT-BRAMS ATMOSPHERIC MODEL WITH FOCUS ON BRAZILIAN FIRE EMISSIONS

We present the new aerosol and trace gas data assimilation system of CCATT-BRAMS, the Coupled Chemistry-Aerosol-Tracer Transport model coupled to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (BRAMS) that is being developed at the Brazilian Centers for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies (CPTEC) and for Earth System Science (CCST) at the National Institute for Space Studies (INPE). The objective of this assimilation system is to improve numerical transport simulations of air pollution sources, mainly from fires, and their dispersion in the atmosphere over South America and the South Atlantic. Model results are corrected with remote sensing and in-situ data in an objective and consistent way. Specifically, the three dimensional variational assimilation technique (3-DVAR) is used, to assimilate Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) columns of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and from the ground based AERONET (AERosol Robotic NETwork) into CCATT-BRAMS. It is expected that the model performance is considerably improved by the observations. The new model results enriched by data assimilation will (i) allow for a number of studies of fire aerosol and tracer formation and transport in the southern hemisphere, and contribute to an enhanced performance of the operational chemical weather forecast by CPTEC/INPE. The gained knowledge will also be of great use for future application on longer temporal scale atmospheric chemistry modeling in the framework of the Brazilian Earth System Model developments. First validation results of the new chemical data assimilation system will be presented.
