NASA has implemented the Earth Observing System Data Information System (EOSDIS) using a distributed, open system. Autonomous facilities possessing unique institutional capabilities and expertise serve as the backbone to the program. These Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) support the EOSDIS Program by providing unique cross-discipline global change research.

The EOSDIS gathers and processes data from NASA's Earth Science Division, which is part of the Science Mission Directorate. Information about the Earth is stored in interconnected data centers, each of which specializes in a different discipline. Currently there are several DAACs around the country that are responsible for processing, archiving, and distributing EOS and other related data to a wide user base.

The DAACs are also members of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIPs), which brings together government agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, and businesses in an effort to make Earth Science information available to a broad community.
