Introduction

The goal of the MODIS Land Product Subsets project is to provide summaries of selected MODIS Land Products for the community to use for validation of models and remote-sensing products, and to characterize field sites.

The MODIS Land Product Subsets are derived from MODIS products that were generated with Collection 4 or later algorithms.

Please be advised that these products are subject to continual review and revision.

The MODIS land product subsets are provided in ASCII and GeoTIFF format.

The subsets are stored as individual text(ASCII) files, each file represents one field site and one MODIS product. The ASCII data covers 7x7 km of the field site. These ASCII files contain comma-delimited rows of parameter values (image bands) for each pixel in the selected area. Each row in the file will contain data from one 8-day, 16-day, or annual period (depending on the temporal frequency of the data product represented).

Quality information, represented as additional bands in MODIS imagery, are also included as interleaved rows in these files. The parameters/bands (number of rows) associated with each data product on a specific acquisition date are product specific. The first line of each ASCII file contains an ID-heading to identify each column's contents.

The GeoTIFF format of the subsets are stored as 31x11 km (Collecton 4) or as 25x25 km (Collection 5) image files in the native sinusoidal projection, band allocation, resolution of the original data. The GeoTIFF files are stored as an individual image file, each file represents one field site and one MODIS product. The individual bands of data are stored within the multi-band GeoTIFF.
