LINKING KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF RISK: MULTIDISCIPLINARY EFFORTS TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CANAIMA NATIONAL PARK, VENEZUELA

The “Risk Factors in the reduction of habitats in Canaima National Park (CNP) (Venezuela): vulnerability and tools for sustainable development” Project starts from the recognition of the degradation of habitats in the Park and its impact on socioeconomic activities. A sustainable management of the CNP requires carrying out an analysis of the (ecological, social, institutional) vulnerability and resilience of the region in the medium and short term, and to develop a platform for concerted efficacious actions. This presentation summarises some of the initiatives carried out by a multidisciplinary research group in linking research on knowledge systems to action in the perspective of the Risk Project, including: a) The development of knowledge systems in the context of an integral view of their use; b) the need to articulate ad hoc methodological approaches in the learning process that combine different cultures and perceptions for the search of sustainable results; c) to design and put in place a concerted plan for the management of the main risk factors in the Park with criteria of sustainability; d) to understand the different logics and interests of stakeholders active in the region through different spatial scales –local, regional, national- and their impact on conflict management and governance.
