LBA-ECO LC-09 Landsat TM and ETM+ Data, Sites in Rondonia and Para, Brazil: 1985-2004
Get Data
Revision date: September 30, 2010

Summary:

This data set includes 15 zipped archives of rectified .tif format Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM+ scenes from near the study sites of Altamira, Santarem, Ponta de Pedras, and Bragantina in the state of Para, Brazil and Machadinho D'Oeste in Rondonia, Brazil. Dates represent the most cloud-free image retrievals from 1985-2004 and are therefore not continuous. These images may be useful to evaluate potential environmental impacts resulting from the establishment of colonization projects in the Amazon.

Implementation of the LBA Data and Publication Policy by Data Users:

The LBA Data and Publication Policy [http://daac.ornl.gov/LBA/lba_data_policy.html] is in effect for a period of five (5) years from the date of archiving and should be followed by data users who have obtained LBA data sets from the ORNL DAAC. Users who download LBA data in the five years after data have been archived must contact the investigators who collected the data, per provisions 6 and 7 in the Policy.

This data set was archived in October 2010. Users who download the data between October 2010 and September 2015 must comply with the LBA Data and Publication Policy.

Data users should use the Investigator contact information in this document to communicate with the data provider. Alternatively, the LBA Web Site [http://lbaeco-archive.ornl.gov/] in Brazil will have current contact information.

Data users should use the Data Set Citation and other applicable references provided in this document to acknowledge use of the data.

2. Data Characteristics:

This data set includes zipped archives of rectified Landsat ETM+ and TM scenes (as TIF .tif files with header files as TIF world .tfw files, and raster metadata as .aux files) near the study sites of Altamira, Santarem, Ponta de Pedras, and Bragantina in the state of Para, Brazil and Machadinho D'Oeste in Rondonia, Brazil. Dates represent the most cloud-free image retrievals from 1985-2004 and are therefore not continuous.

Data have been rectified, unless otherwise noted (see individual file information below).

Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 included (listed as layers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) (unless otherwise noted). n/a=not available.

Corner pixel coordinates lie within the center of the pixel.

File names include image product name, path/row information, and acquisition date, for example:

3. Data Application and Derivation:

Data to be used in spatial analyzes of land use and land cover change. Methods incorporating both landscape ecology and remote sensing techniques may be useful to evaluate potential environmental impacts resulting from the establishment of colonization projects in the Amazon.

4. Quality Assessment:

Data, where georeferenced, generated to previous, rectified images with low RMS error (<1.0).

5. Data Acquisition Materials and Methods:

Data acquired from:
-USGS EROS (http://edc.usgs.gov/products/satellite/mss.html)
-Landsat.org (http://www.landsat.org)
-INPE (http://www.inpe.br/)

Bands combined and registered to UTM using ERDAS Imagine 8.7 (Leica Geosystems, St Gallen, Switzerland). Images were georeferenced to previously rectified images using ERDAS Imagine 8.7. Radiometric and atmospheric correction done according to methods described by Green et al. (2005).
Data originally in the Imagine file format (.img), but exported to TIF (.tif) using ERDAS Imagine 8.7.
